Samuels take West Indies closer to World Cup

West Indies 290 for 6 (Samuels 86, Hope 76, Muzarabani 2-36) beat Zimbabwe 289 all out (Taylor 138, Mire 45, Holder 4-35, Roach 3-55) by four wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Clinching close matches and playing out last-gasp finishes have become a habit for Zimbabwe in this tournament. For once, however, the result went against them as West Indies won by four wickets to record their fifth-highest successful chase in ODI history. This meant they were well in control of their fate heading into their final group fixture against Scotland. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, faced a must-win in their final Super Sixes fixture against UAE.

Brendan Taylor scored his 10th one-day international hundred to propel Zimbabwe to 289, a total that could’ve swelled further if not for a controversial no-ball call that resulted in Sikandar Raza’s wicket. In response, West Indies lost Chris Gayle early, but a 135-run third-wicket stand between Shai Hope and Marlon Samuels tipped the chase in West Indies’ favour. Late wickets raised hopes of an unlikely comeback for Zimbabwe, but Rovman Powell’s nerveless cameo helped avoid any last-minute hiccups as West Indies won with an over to spare.

West Indies’ hopes hinged on a quickfire start, but Zimbabwe may have entertained hopes of extending their unbeaten run in the tournament when Chris Gayle was out slicing to third man off Blessing Muzarabani in the sixth over. But Hope and Lewis saw the shine off the ball and cashed in on anything loose.

Lewis did bulk of the scoring in a partnership of 72 with Hope. But when he played too early, and with hard hands, to give Sikandar Raza a simple caught-and-bowled chance in the 22nd over, Zimbabwe sensed an opportunity. This was however extinguished slowly as Samuels and Hope, went berserk after digging in.

The bounce in the track took the bite out of what is usually Zimbabwe’s strength: their spinners. Deliveries that might have shot through at the shins in Bulawayo stood up on this hard surface, and Samuels’ first three boundaries all came off long hops. Adjusting their lengths with the field spread, the spinners didn’t concede a single boundary between overs 26 and 35, but the floodgates opened soon.

Hope got to a 71-ball fifty in the 34th over and, seemingly taking that as his cue, Samuels immediately shifted gears. Raza’s offspin was flambeed over long-off for two enormous sixes, and Samuels then added two more sixes and a four to take 18 off an over from Cremer. The game turned then and there.

But as they got closer, West Indies let it slip briefly. Samuels started to cramp up as his mobility at the crease suffered. He swiped two more brutal boundaries off Muzarabani, but then pushed flat-footed at one that left him off the pitch to be well caught by a tumbling Taylor behind the stumps. Then, Jason Holder fell. But with two overs to go, West Indies needing 11, Powell boldly stepped out to hit Sean Williams for six over long-on to close out the game.

Earlier in the afternoon, Taylor had work to do when he first got to the crease this morning. After Cephas Zhuwao gloved to fine leg, Hamilton Masakadza was removed by a brutal lifter from Holder. When Solomon Mire was forced to retire because of blurred vision after a bouncer struck him on the right side of his helmet grille, Zimbabwe were effectively 30 for 3.

Craig Ervine helped steady the innings with Taylor, while Sean Williams helped to hoist the mainsail with a bellicose 34 at better than a run-a-ball. Together they helped to keep Zimbabwe ticking at five an over, or thereabouts, but it wasn’t until Raza joined him at the crease that Taylor really began to let loose. Together they rattled along with a boundary an over, with Taylor fittingly reaching his hundred with a reverse sweep.

Raza was given out in controversial circumstances when he was out bowled, only for replays to suggest no part of Holder’s foot was behind the line. The third umpire, however, gave Holder the benefit of doubt to shock a strong home crowd. It was a moment that may have well cost Zimbabwe the 20 extra runs they desperately needed at the end.

Mourinho blasts back at ‘worst manager in history’ De Boer over Rashford criticism.

Mourinho blasts back at ‘worst manager in history’ De Boer over Rashford criticism.

The ex-Crystal Palace boss has questioned Manchester United’s handling of an exciting talent, but the man in charge at Old Trafford is not listening

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has blasted back at “worst manager in the history of the Premier League” Frank de Boer following criticism of his handling of Marcus Rashford.

The man sacked by Crystal Palace just four top-flight fixtures into the 2017-18 campaign has questioned the methods being used at Old Trafford to bring the best out of an exciting talent.

Having seen Rashford mark his first league start since Boxing Day with a match-winning brace against Liverpool, De Boer told BT Sport: “It’s a pity that the manager is Mourinho, because he’s an English player and you want him to be given time.

“He can make mistakes but Mourinho is not like that and if he has one or two not good games then he puts him out. He’s very young, he needs games. But he’s so talented and you want to see him play every week.”

Unsurprisingly, Mourinho has not taken too kindly to seeing his methods criticised and has hit back at De Boer, telling reporters: “I read something, some quote from the worst manager in the history of the Premier League, Frank de Boer saying it’s not good for Rashford to have a coach like me.

“If he was coached by Frank he would be coached how to lose because he lost every game.”

Mourinho went on to defend his management of Rashford – a player who has made 40 appearances across all competitions this season and 93 in total under United’s current coach.

The Portuguese added: “I try to give the best to the kids, education. Marcus I have to be honest and give the credit to the people of the academy that were responsible for his formation and to [Louis] Van Gaal for his first season in the first team.

“But if you go to his numbers and how many games he played with me. I would say he was in the top five with more matches for two seasons. The best thing to happen is to have experience. And Marcus is having these experiences. I’m really happy too.

“He plays for United many matches, he starts some, comes from the bench for others. I am really pleased with everything.

“Does he play every match from the start? No, of course not. He’s a player we trust. Not many were expecting him to start against Liverpool and he had a good match, not just about scoring goals. I’m really happy with Marcus.”

Mourinho comes to Conte and Chelsea’s defence after ‘ridiculous’ criticism

Mourinho comes to Conte and Chelsea’s defence after ‘ridiculous’ criticism

The Blues came in for intense criticism after losing to Manchester City, but the rival manager doesn’t believe the harsh talk is warranted

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho surprisingly came to the defence of former club Chelsea and embattled coach Antonio Conte, calling criticism of them “unfair”.

Mourinho and Conte have not seen eye-to-eye for the majority of the latter’s time in England, with the pair engaging in a protracted and often unseemly war of words this season.

During their spat, Mourinho questioned Conte’s integrity for becoming embroiled in a match-fixing scandal – from which the Italian was later exonerated – and the Blues boss responded by calling his rival a “little man”.

But their relationship appeared to have mellowed during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to United on February 25, with the pair shaking hands.

That game saw United make a slow start and they did so again on Monday in the dramatic 3-2 win over Crystal Palace, with comparisons made between the two contests, but Mourinho insists the only common denominator is strong opposition.

“Honestly, I know what you are writing as a consequence of yesterday,” Mourinho told reporters at Selhurst Park, 24 hours after Conte’s side came under fire for their defensive approach in a 1-0 defeat at runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.

“But Chelsea is a fantastic team and, I know it looks a bit strange because you know we had problems in the past, but it’s quite ridiculous that I have to say how unfair it is to speak the way people are speaking about the English champion.

“They are still the English champion. Chelsea was strong against us. They started very strong and created difficulty in that initial part of the game.

“And tonight [Monday] I think Roy [Hodgson, Palace manager] was strong. We were expecting [Jairo] Riedewald in defensive midfield and [Alexander] Sorloth out left, but he came with a 4-4-2, two aggressive strikers together, strong in the air then dropping back to defend.

“Roy was very good. I don’t even want to blame my players and say the start was not good.

“The start was not good because they [Palace] were good and matches like this [going behind early], it’s only possible if the two teams are good.”

Monday’s win gave Mourinho’s side a nine-point edge over fifth-placed Chelsea, with the Blues sitting just five points back of Spurs in the race for the top four.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic hints at comeback for Sweden at World Cup

Zlatan Ibrahimovic hints at comeback for Sweden at World Cup

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has hinted he may come out of international retirement for Sweden to play at World Cup in Russia this summer.

The striker announced his retirement from the national set-up after featuring for his country at Euro 2016.

A move to Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain soon followed, though the 36-year-old has seen his second season in English football hampered by injury.

Speaking this week to Swedish media, Ibrahimovic, who has featured just seven times in all competitions this season, implied he could make a return.

“I miss the national team. If I want, I do it. I want to feel I can deliver a good performance,” he said.

“We’ll see, it’s a tough question. I want to feel that I can perform and give back. I don’t want to come just because I’m somebody. The door isn’t closed for anything.”

Ibrahimovic is Sweden's all-time top scorer with 62 strikes in 116 appearances

Sweden booked their spot in the Russia tournament without their former talisman, beating Italy in a two-legged playoff in November

Janne Andersson’s side begin their campaign with a fixture against South Korea in Nizhny Novgorod on Monday, June 18.

Group F will also see Sweden come up against holders Germany and Mexico.

The striker also suggested it would not even require a phone call to bring him back: “I don’t think anyone needs to call. If I want to, I’m there, that’s how it is. But one thing at a time. When I can do what I want to, I’ll have other thoughts.”

Ibrahimovic is Sweden’s all-time leading goalscorer with 62 international goals in 116 appearances, and was captain upon his retirement.

FC Platinum eliminated from the CAF Champions League

FC Platinum eliminated from the CAF Champions League

FC Platinum have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after they lost in the preliminary round to end Zimbabwe’s interest in the continental showpiece.

The country’s sole representatives in the elite continental competition suffered a two one loss to Angolan giants Desportivo de Agosto at Mandava stadium on Wednesday following a three nil trouncing in Luanda a week ago.

Desportivo De Agosto proceeds to the first round with a 5 – 1 aggregate score-line and will now meet Bidvest Wits of South Africa.

It was always going to be an uphill task for Norman Mapeza’s side to overturn the first leg result and the rains that pounded Mandava Stadium during the first half made it difficult for the home side as they were forced to adjust their type of play due to a water logged pitch.

From the onset, the visitors looked comfortable on the ball and they launched numerous raids but each time their main striker Bakulu Jacques was ruled offside.

However, as the game went on FC Platinum managed to stamp their authority and started dominating the game albeit without any result upfront.

Realising that his attackers were running out of ideas, Mapeza withdrew an out of sorts Never Tigere and thrust in Charles Sibanda in the 36th minute.

The substitution sparked the home team into life with Sibanda using his experience to provide some anxious moments for the visitors.

FC Platinum’s fate was sealed in the 55th minute when substitute Lompala Bokamba took advantage of a defence mix up to thrust the visitors into the lead.

The home side refused to allow the goal to demoralise them and they continued attacking until Rodwell Chinyengetere found the equaliser in the 65th minute.

However, they were to suffer a major heartache when, right at the death, Desportivo De Agosto’s goal poacher Bakulu Jacques put the last nail on FC Platinum’s coffin and condemned them to yet another early exit from the competition.

Mapeza said the goals they conceded came through defensive mistakes.

“It was a good game of football, we got good opportunities but we failed to utilise them,” said a disappointed Mapeza.

“We lost possession in the middle of the park and during that transitional period they hit us on the counter and scored.

“We manage to score but again on transition they managed to score, we need to work on our transition from attack to defence”.

Desportivo De Agosto mentor Zoran Manojlovic the away goal gave them the upper hand in the match and the winner was a bonus for them.
